The thyroid gland produces hormones that control the rate of metabolism and effect the development and function of many other body functions. The two most common thyroid disorders are hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid).

Hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland) – shows symptoms such as irritability, tachycardia, heat intolerance, increased sweating, constipation and weight loss.
Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) – shows symptoms such as weight gain, feeling cold, fatigue and depression.
